A New Years’ Message

As time for the 2009 SD legislature draws near, I’ve been making plans to prepare my family and others for my absence—on and off—for ten weeks. Of course I knew of the time away when I decided to run, but now it has become more “real” as it is upon us. I’m so excited to serve and admit to a little apprehensive of the time away, but a recent article in the Argus Leader, dated Sunday, Dec 28th has put things into perspective for me. The headline reads, “Guards goodbye: 43 members of SD unit leave for six-month departure”. The photo shows Air National Guardsman Evan Peterson kissing the top of his wife Stacy’s head and embracing both her and their daughter, Taylor, as they cry. This article caused me to pause and think about our individual sacrifices and contributions to our society. Their longer, more worrisome separation makes my own, safe and secure contribution look quite easy. It also gives me the conviction that I can be of help. By working together we can improve our government and our quality of life here in South Dakota, the US, as well as the world.

We have many challenges. Our state has a slim budget this year, but we all realize it could be worse. As a newcomer to the legislature I look at this as a time of strengthening communication and the opportunity to research and present ideas that can create new opportunities for all of us. I look forward to working with Representatives Tidemann and Pitts on such issues as education, healthcare, infrastructure and economic development. The committees I will be serving on are Commerce, Taxation, and Health & Human Services. My schedule allows me to sit in on Education as well. I have a sharp learning curve, but I have also sharpened my pencil!

In the last many weeks, I’ve met with a number of groups and individuals that have given me information on their issues and industries. I’m so appreciative of the time and energy everyone spends in collecting this information and sharing it with me. It will come in very handy as I set up “office” in Pierre.

In closing, I want to wish you a wonderful New Year, and I hope that your dreams come true in 2009. If you find yourself in Pierre during session, please look me up. I will always find time to have a coffee break with my constituents, as that will remind me of home and all we are working for.
Yours,
